The SS started out as a branch of another Nazi organization, the SA, and was made to be Hitlers bodyguards. Originally it only had 30 men, but over time it gained more and more memberships because the SS was more loyal to Hitler then the semi-independent SA. Eventually it grew to have almost a million members both fighting on the front lines, and working as political police.
